About Our Farm
Bragenham Farm is a small mixed farm on the edge of Great Brickhill, a few miles from Leighton Buzzard. We started selling free range eggs in 2023 and grass-fed meat from our native breed sheep. It is our belief that good food comes from non-intensive systems and that more people should have access to locally-produced nutritious food that doesn’t cost the earth.
The hens are indoors currently due to the mandatory housing order for avian flu prevention, but are usually free ranging outdoors on grass, in a mobile house. In our usual system they are free to roam within a large area during the day and take themselves to bed at dusk. While outdoors they can graze on different grasses and herbs and forage for insects. They also have access to dust bathing areas – this is a natural behaviour for hens and helps control parasites. Their feed is free from soya and palm oil, so it does not contribute to deforestation overseas.
Due to losses from fox attacks we invested in a livestock guardian dog last year – he lives with the hens to keep them safe from predators (helping himself to an egg every now and then).
Our sheep lamb in late Spring when the weather is milder. The flush of grass gives the ewes an important nutritional boost towards the end of their pregnancy when they most need it, and gives their lambs a great start. We generally.sell hogget in Spring and mutton in Autumn – as traditional cuts and burgers. Our meat is sold from the fridge when fresh, then frozen to ensure longer availability and to preserve quality.
We run a regular egg delivery to Great Brickhill on Tuesdays – free delivery, minimum order of 12 eggs. Collection from farm gate possible most days but please message ahead for availability and to arrange a collection time.
